Have An Impossible Dream

Like John Richardson, I have dreamed about being about being able to fly. No surprise then that one of my favorite books many years ago was Jonathan Livingston Seagull. The author, Richard Bach, wrote that "Most gulls don't bother to learn more than the simplest facts of flight--how to get from shore to food and back again." That could have described me for too many years. Someday I will share some of those details, but, for now, I agree with blogger John.

Everyone should Have An Impossible Dream.

It's never too late to change your life. It's never too late to try something new. It's never too late to do, well, anything you can dream of. It might be harder to accomplish the longer you wait, but it will only be impossible if you don't try.

When I weighed 367 pounds I was completely out of balance in all kinds of ways. Life was not much fun, and I felt trapped with no hope. Today I am in the best shape since high school at 208 pounds. Today anything seems possible. All it took was a DECISION, followed by daily ACTION and sharing the goal with friends who would hold me ACCOUNTABLE.

Decision
The first thing I had to do was decide that I really wanted to look like the me in an old photo holding my then 1 year old daughter. My estimate was that I was might have weight 225 pounds, so I set that as my 18 month goal. It was October 1, 2010.

Action
Setting that goal was not enough. Achieving any goal requires daily steps toward it. David Allen would call those the "next actions." For me the next action would be to eat breakfast the next morning. And to eat lunch. And then have a sensible dinner. And go for a walk. That may seem like an odd goal, but I was fat because I was not eating right; hardly ever ate breakfast or lunch.  And please note that I didn't set calorie goals or exercise goals. For goodness sake, I didn't have any idea 21 months ago how many calories I should net each day. I just knew that I needed to eat right and exercise. Decision must be followed by action. My next action was to eat breakfast.

Accoutability
My first accountability partner was TLOML. I told Cheryl what I wanted to do and asked that she remind me to eat breakfast each day and pack a lunch and some small snacks. The next morning I ate breakfast, headed to work, and received a text from Cheryl - "did you eat breakfast?" Later I would add Marshall and Wayne and then my friends on MyFitnessPal. Earlier this year I asked you join my group of accountability partners by focusing this blog on my journey to a new life.

Results
The dream seemed impossible on October 1st, 2010. My goal was to lose 142 pounds in 15 months. Guess what! It took only 11 months to hit that goal. When the fifteen months was up I had lost 152 pounds, and have since lost ten more. My pant size went from size 60 to size 34. I ran a 5K one year after making the decision to look good again.

Do you have a dream? If not, why not? If you do, do you need an accountability partner?

Please use the comment button to share your success, your struggles or any other thought you have about being a dreamer!

I cannot do everything, But still I can do something.

“I am only one,
But still I am one.
I cannot do everything,
But still I can do something;
And because I cannot do everything
I will not refuse to do the something that I can do.”

- Edward Everett Hale

Many years ago a wise friend of mine, Charles Crim, gave me a piece of advice I have never forgotten. "Doc, all you can do is all you can do."

There are two lessons in that bit of truth.  At the time I needed to know that there would always be more work to do than I would be able to get done. I would like to say that I instantly understood that I should give myself permission to go home at the end of the workday with things undone. I did not. It took me several years. If this was an article about productivity or planning we could spend some time talking about how important this truth is to understanding how to get things done. But, today I want to share the other lesson from that simple statement.

I can do something.

If you are struggling with how to lose that extra weight, or gain some muscle, or change the world, it is easy to be overwhelmed by the enormity of the challenge and not know what to do next. That soon leads to thinking you can't do anything and you are stuck where you are.

Don't you believe it.

When I was 367 pounds - grossly overweight - I knew I had to do something. I could start by eating sensibly. And I could start walking. I didn't know then what I know now about eating and exercising. What I did know is that I could start with what I could do. Cut back on the size of meals. Drink more water. Go for a walk.

It works!

This morning I weighed 203.6 pounds; in the last twenty months I have lost 163 pounds and built up some pretty good muscle mass. Even though I can't even remember the last time I saw those numbers on the scales - high school probably - but the two lessons from Charles' statement still guide me. There are days when I can't do everything I want, but I can do all that I can do.

And if you want to change the world while you are at it, take peek at this web site that gave me the idea for today's post.

Diet Exercise: How To Get Motivated!: Famished After Your Workout?

Although it has been a while since I posted something new, I have been working out. This spring has been incredibly busy with lots of speaking appearances around the country. Twice I have gone coast-to-coast and done more than one red-eye flight. Something had to give. The something was the blog - temporarily. Because I sure was not going to give up my workouts or my daily fitness routines. I offer the picture to the left taken a couple of weeks ago after I got back from the gym. I wish I had the same profile picture from a year ago so that we could see how much improved that is.

The schedule has made it hard to stay motivated to exercise, and the travel times could have interfered with my regular meal times. I had to time my meals to layovers, and when I couldn't.... well, that's what the Clif Builder's Bars in my laptop bag are for.

As for the exercise, it is always possible to get some walking or jogging in, so those runner's shorts traveled with me and have toured several downtown areas around the USA in the last three months.

But right now, I am starved. Just got back from the gym. I am going to follow Richard's advice and go feed those muscles. Enjoy his article.

Proof That The Journey Gym Works

Ten weeks ago I started a new workout routine. In those 70 days I have shared some of my thoughts about my new Journey Gym, and some of my activities during the Journey Gym 70-Day Challenge.

At the half-way mark I wrote that a small weight gain did not tell the whole story. A week later I shared that my youngest son had said, "Wow Dad, You Have Definition." Two weeks ago, a co-worker who is four years younger than me asked, "how do you stay in such good shape?" Recently, TLOML has told me several times that she likes the look of my biceps and deltoids. And last week I slipped into size 34 jeans.

Today I offer additional proof that it is important to track more than your weight. At the half-way mark of The Challenge, my weight was at 213, almost four pounds more than when I started the 70-Day Challenge. The good news was that I had lost a total of four inches on my body. Gain four pounds, but lose four inches? My body was telling me to monitor the balance between carbs, fat and protein more closely. Thank goodness for the nutrition info on food packaging and the tools at MyFitnessPal.Com. I made adjustments to my diet by adding more carbs and making sure I ate several times a day. The good news is that I lost those four pounds. The more exciting news is that I gained four total inches. It's exciting because of where I gained it. An inch gain on both biceps. An inch gain on both forearms. That's the result of the resistance bands on the Journey Gym. Lost another inch around the waist with small increases in calf and chest size. The result is what you see in the picture - me showing off for Cheryl, TLOML.

When I introduced rule #6 - Work It Out As You Go, I told you what Cheryl said she wanted for Christmas in 2010 - biceps. She finally has them. This afternoon we are going to celebrate. I am going to put on my black 34" Wrangler jeans and take her to a movie. Would you like to celebrate the same kind of life renewal? Quit thinking about it and start doing it!

For less than the price of most gym memberships, you can have your own Journey Gym.

Eat Right Means Nutritionally Smart: Seven Simple Ways to Eat Healthier (with Strawberry Orange Sorbet recipe)

A friend of mine, Anne Milford (@book_nurse), called the other day to talk about the transformation that Cheryl and I have made to our bodies, our life and our marriage. Near the end of our conversation, she asked me a question about counting calories, "did you always use MyFitnessPal.com?" The answer - not at first, not until about 4 months after I started. What did I do first? Made my best educated guess about portion size by reading nutrition labels on EVERYTHING I ate. I didn't know then what BMI or BMR meant. I didn't even know how many calories I should eat. At least not for the first few weeks. But I read everything I could about nutrition. I researched each category to find out how many carbs, how much or how little fat, what kind of carbs, what kind of protein. Then about a year ago, while looking up the calories for some food I had eaten, I discovered MyFitnessPal.Com. Soon I discovered they had an app for my phone. It's easy to use, so I keep using it. Only missed one day of logging in the last 365. Back to the phone call with Anne.

About 30 minutes after we finished talking, I had pizza for lunch, and dutifully opened the MFP application on my iPad. After recording the slice of pizza and the salad I saw a question posted by a friend on MFP - "How many of you went over on your sugars regularly and still lost weight? Is this negotiable at all?" It is the kind of question I used to struggle with. Maybe you do, also. Here's my advice, for what it's worth. It's not just about the sugars, or the sodium or the protein. You have to balance with your daily exercise. Calories in. Calories out. Eat Right. Exercise. So, before you stress too much, do some reading. Here's a good blog post on nutrition. I have not tried the recipe, but I found the information to be very good.

Wow Dad, You Have Definition

Bicep Exercise on Day 2 of Journey Gym Challenge
If you follow us on Facebook, you know that last Saturday Cheryl and I went to the South Florida Renaissance Fair. After about five hours of walking around and having fun in our village squire and wench outfits we came home. But no rest. Saturday is my day to go shopping. Off to Publix I go and an hour later I take ten bags of groceries out of the trunk and carry to the house - in one trip. Yep, one trip. Easy to do when you work out.
Get your JourneyGym today!

About the same time I started to the car, our youngest son pulled into the driveway and watched me. After putting the fruit of my labor away, I moved to the office, otherwise known as poolside, to enjoy a short rest on a very warm day. Sean comes out to the pool and says, "Flex for me." So, I did. He then tells me that he had noticed that I have some real definition in my arms. Good thing. Cheryl wanted biceps for Christmas. I knew that she meant December of 2010. Well, Santa was late with that delivery. Be he has delivered.

If you are just now finding this blog that might not sound impressive. But go look at the fat guy in the red shirt on the first post of 2012 - http://docdevore.blogspot.com/2012/01/2011-journey-to-new-life.html. In fact, you can compare the photo above to not just the guy in the red shift, but to the guy in the white shirt in December and see a change in muscle tone. Today is halfway for me on the 70 Day Journey Gym Challenge. I think the biceps have improved in three months. The JourneyGym has given me a new way to continue my 18-month habit. Cheryl, TLOML, kind of likes the new look.

Lesson for you? Don't give up. Remember my simple rules. 1 - Eat Right. 2 - Exercise. By the way, it is also working for my friend Duane McClinton; he's lost more than 20 pounds in the last two months. You can do it, too.

Personal Responsibility and Soup: A Blog by Robin Descamp

Each evening when I leave the office there is a decision I must make. Will I work out? The answer is always yes, but each day I ask myself that question. Seems odd doesn't it. After 17 months of exercising every day and eating right every day, I still ask that question - will I work out. Do you wrestle with yourself in the same way? If you have a job that keeps you active and on your feet and doing something, you are blessed. I love my job, but much of my time is at a keyboard in front of three monitors. Skype, Instant Messenger and phone play a huge part in my day. I am what they call a "knowledge worker." Some days are very draining, others very energizing. Mentally, not physically. There's the problem we all have. A few days ago I read Robin Descamps' post,  journey gym 70-day Challenge: Personal Responsibility and Soup in which she writes:

I am responsible for my success in this endeavor, just as I am responsible for why I was heavy in the first place.  This applies not just to my health status but everything else in my life.  It's all on me.

Today when my mind asked that question, I looked at the thermometer - 83 degrees at 6 pm - and said, "I am going to the beach and run." My legs are tired, but my mental state has been reinvigorated. I feel good that I took responsibility for my own health and followed my own rule #2 - exercise. Every day!

Spring break is almost here. Lots of people at the beach. I don't know where you are headed, but remember to eat right and exercise. And get some rest. You'll need it.

Robin DesCamp: My life keeps getting in the way of my plans.

It's been a busy week. I have had the pleasure of spending time with my daughter, her husband, and our only grandchild for the last six days. That's the cool part of attending the Annual HIMSS Conference here in Las Vegas this week. But, being on the road has made me get creative about how to exercise each day during this 70 day challenge. So, this evening as I finally catch up on my RSS feeds, blog reading, email and packing for the return to Florida tomorrow, I saw Robin's post:  journey gym 70-day Challenge: My life keeps getting in the way of my plans.

Guess I'm not the only one that had to work around life this week.  Enjoy her well written article. I'll be back with some new posts after I return to the Ramblewood area of Coral Springs, Florida.

Give Up On Those Resolutions! It Only Takes A Little Work!

Photo from http://www.aspenranchrealestate.com/
Growing up I worked hard. Dad was a forest ranger, so finding fun places to hike and fish and ride horses was not a problem. During the summers of my high school years in Mancos, Colorado and Powell, Wyoming I worked in the hay fields. In fact, I had a good reputation of being a good "stacker", which meant I could work all summer, stay in shape, and earn decent money for teenager. And then my dream job in radio came true and I found myself behind a desk. No big deal, right. Wrong. I kept up my habit of eating the amount of food you need when working in the field, or hiking a mountain. Wrong choice, because banging out words on a typewriter doesn't burn the same amount of calories. Over the last 50 years I have been up and down on weight, have tried more than one diet plan, several exercise routines, and yet in October, 2010 I tipped the scales at 367 pounds. I looked old and tired and decided to finally change my lifestyle. Seventeen months later and 157 pounds lighter I feel great. So, when I saw Sara's post earlier this week on MyFitnessPal.com it caught my eye. If you can make a New Year's Resolution to lose weight and stick to it, go for it. But my experience is the same as Sara, the Rocket Scientist - Give Up On Those Resolutions!

Or as Granddad used to say, "do what I mean, not what I say!"

Bodybuilding.com - Kiyoshi 'The Samurai' Moody: Bodybuilding’s Natural Warrior

This is week #3 of The Journey Gym Challenge. Day 16. A long day, too. When I left the office to head home I was tired, hungry, and just wanted to sit down next to TLOML. Instead, when I arrived, I gave her quick kiss, changed clothes and headed out to the gym, otherwise known as the DeVore Poolside Office, and cranked up a new video from the folks at JourneyGym.Com and got my workout in. And I feel better about myself, just like I always do when I get started. Then I sat down to catch up on Google+, Facebook, Linkedin, Skype, and this newest post over at BodyBuilding.Com. Here is a little snippet from David Robson about a real champion who knows how to stay motivated. Enjoy!
Where do you find the motivation to constantly push yourself to the limit in the hopes of maintaining your position as one of, if not the best natural bodybuilder currently competing?
There are many things that motivate me to keep pushing. These are in no particular order. First, people who say it can't be done drive me to push beyond any limits.
Second, the competitors I compete against (Phillip Ricardo, Mike Waddington, Cleveland Thomas, Panex Pierre) push me to be my best.
Third, I want to make my daughter proud of her dad. She loves talking about me to her classmates and once brought me to show-and-tell.
And fourth, my mother......

One Year and 90 Pounds Ago (Rule #4)

Feb. 12, 2011
One year ago (Feb 12), Monica Adams made these notes about the shape I was in. She knows that to set a good goal you need to know where you are (Rule #4).

February 12, 2011, Monica recorded my stats:
305.8 pounds, 37% body fat, 38.1 BMI
Flexibility pretty good; lower body weak.

I thought I was going to die as Monica put me through various exercise tests. She was glad to hear that I had already lost 62 pounds but quickly asked about my goal to get to 225 pounds and "pop" for Cheryl, TLOML. When she asked how Cheryl defined "pop", I showed her a picture of the character "Jesse" on the USA TV Series, Burn Notice.

A lot has happened in the last 12 months, but most relevant is that today the stats are:
212.2 pounds, 17.2% body fat, 26.4 BMI, Flexibility fantastic, lower body awesome strength, and Cheryl says I pop pretty good. I'll drop a photo comparison on here a little later.

So, what are you doing to get in shape? Leave a comment below, or send me email.)

Be sure to get some breakfast, and take Clif Bar with you. And start your weight loss journal. Need one? Maybe buy.com can help with one of these.

Day 11 is for Exercise (Rule #2)

Today started out a little cloudy and cool, so it seemed like a good day to hop on the elliptical and then build a workout routine for the JourneyGym. Light breakfast (eat right) followed by 21.5 minutes on the elliptical (301 calories burned) followed by a 6 minute routine with the very portable and convenient JourneyGym. You can check out a quick 3 minute summary of the workout over on my YouTube channel.
What exercise did you do today?
