Eat Right: A Healthy Diet Doesn't Have To Taste Bad

Probably not eating right!
But tastes great!
What a great night with Cheryl for Valentine's Day! We enjoyed our first trip ever to The Melting Pot. Had a great time. Enjoyed the meal. Good thing I budgeted my calories. Only went over my daily goal by a little. Even with two lobster tails. And chocolate. It is true - you can eat good while eating right. Must be why some folks ask me what diet I went on to lose 157 pounds in 15 months. My answer is still the same. I did not go on a diet. I changed my approach to food. Eat right size portions that match the daily calorie use. Simple math. Calories in minus calories out. If you fear that eating right means giving up good taste then read what Portland born mom, wife and attorney, Robin Descamp, says about it. She writes a blog (journey gym 70-day Challenge: A healthy diet doesn't have to taste bad) to chronicle her (and other's) 70 Day Journey Gym Challenge. She writes:
The thing is, if you want to find good recipes that won't make you large, you just need to do a little looking around.  Oh, how I love the Internet.  I have made several dishes from many different websites over the past two weeks, and you would never know they are not bad for you.  These include Thai chicken curry, panko and pistachio-crusted salmon, Moroccan chicken, and rack of lamb with fresh mint and fruit chutney.
Robin, here is a glimpse of what Cheryl and I ate last night.
Dipping Sauce Fondue Pot Hmmm. Chocolate
Because of last night, I missed working out, but no worry. These days I am more active during the day, and tonight I made up for it with a double length JourneyGym routine that wore me out before settling down with a light dinner and then my keyboard. Remember: Eat Right. Exercise. It's that simple. Did not say it was easy. Now it's time for me to hit the shower, and then cuddle up with a new book from Buy.Com.

RULE #2: Ten Point Seven Miles in 13.2 Minutes! WOW. You Need to Read This One!

The photo collection here is a summary of a wonderul day. Started with God explaining Genesis 1:1 to me. He's been trying to do that for years; He says I might be on the verge of understanding. Whew! He told me we could talk about it tomorrow. I thanked Him and said I had some home work, a report on how I spent my day.

There it is. Take a moment to study the photos because I am tired after going 10.1 miles today. [sfx: sound of easy breathing] Ready for me to continue?

Thanks for letting me catch my breath. First a postscript to yesterday's post. I hope it only took you 7 minutes or less eat the post because Rule #1, although simple, is hard. The Parable of the Posting means that publishing was easy. Writing it, editing, proofing, running it by the EIC and TLOML, the exec team, getting the photos arranged, and getting the sales team to secure the necessary and appropriate advertising was a lot harder. It took seven hours plus or minus to make the press deadline, barely. My CMO says I was late; I think the team delivered on time. Thank goodness for the Internet; at least we didn't have a real "print deadline."

That's the introduction. In the coming days we'll share the story of all those photos, but today, I was really focused on rule #2. Cheryl surprised me just before Christmas with a Timex Ironman Triathalon Watch. WOW! Really? Yes, really! Today was the first day of trials to test the setup. I took it for a run.  Literally. And some walking. And some driving. Emphasis on the driving.

This cool device has heart rate monitor, GPS navigation, route tracking, triathalon training, USB links to my own training calendar, and ability to automatically Tweet my accomplishment while simultaneously posting a status update to Facebook. My first post on FB includes the phrase, "trial and error." The trial had lots of errors, but most rollouts of an alpha level project have errors. Tomorrow we'll debug what went wrong. Today I can report that the almost two hours of cardio and conversation and strength conditioning were fun. There's the simplicity of rule #2. Hard work, but fun.

Now the cold hard facts. That's supposed to be a funny lead-in according to my CMO, Jeremy Ferkel. When I asked the CFO, his brother, "Can I have a heater for my office just like the one I found at the store today?" Continuing, I explained, "My cardio involved running through the isles to test out the CMO's new line of running shoes while doing practical things, like grocery shopping."  He said it was okay with him if I could figure out how to pay for it. Hmm. Same thing TLOML said.

In the picture above you see two of my four offices. My preference is the one by the pool. Here in South Florida it has turned cold; well, colder than I like. In one of the other pictures you see me in another office - the formal living room. Not because it was quiet or spacious or had WiFi. No! It was warm inside IF the sweater stayed on. Cleverly placed by those two photos is what I have requistioned - a space heater for my office by the pool. The exec team has been told that I would be more productive if I was happy, and they said something about bottom line. So I sent my assistant back to them to suggest that I can't type in cold weather which makes my revenue per employee go down significantly. That's when someone handed me the old sweater they found in my "Wyoming Cowboy" closet.

So, I turn to you. Do you suppose you could find one and buy it? I'll pay you back. When you do, just Skype me at doc.devore and leave a message. I'll call back with where to wire money and give you delivery instructions.

GTG GTD because my hands are still cold. Talk to you tomorrow. Be prepared to let me know how you did with your rules today. As for me, I only burned about 327 calories in those two hours, and ate only about 1937 calories +/-.

Here are some links to where you can find the one I want, and the one I want costs about $200 I think. If you find it, I'll tell the EIC it only cost $59, okay? [wink] Oh, the other place helps me think warm thoughts. Because I WILL need a new swimming suit before the real beach season starts in a couple of weeks. Please let me know which one you think I would look good in!

Good night from Ramblewood! (Or should I say G'Day? Time on the Internet is confusing to me. Keep telling the CIO that it's pointless to have these deadlines because the Internet is eternal and has no end.

Eating Right Is Hard (But Not As Hard As You Think)

Wynn Dee listens to Cheryl describe what Doc
thought portion size meant.
KISS, YAGNI and GTD really do work, so if your New Year's Resolution to lose 157 pounds is not working out as planned,  please lend me your ears for about 7 minutes.

Before we get started, please put down your protein shake. Forget for a moment the new wonder herb you are about to mix into your fat free milk. Before you swallow either, you need to know how to do this the easy way. I promise that the definition of YAGNI is in the footnote* below. Now, here's the secret to losing 7 pounds by Valentines Day. Are you ready?

(Oh, BTW, I am giving away a LOT of FREE stuff today that I will need to pay for, so please click on one or two sponsor links; thanks. TLOML reminded me about her new AlienWare laptop LOL)

Let me tell you the story of a man named Jed.....**
My Uncle Buck was an old sailor. Growing up on the Western Slope of Colorado, as a 10 year old boy seemed the strongest and smartest man alive; maybe best cowboy I ever met next to my Grandad Verne. Which is why I always laughed when he would say, "Hell, I don't know, I'm just a city slicker, but your Grandad told me how to do that." We may have been talking about how to pack a string of horses up Lost Solar Creek, or climbing down to the log jam up the South Fork of the White River, or maybe Mom's only brother John's expedition last year deep into the darkness of Spring Cave. Let's pretend it was me asking how to keep the milk cold in the little steam running in front of the cabin. I said, "We don't have a refrigerator."*

Instead of describing the process sitting on the porch of the cabin, he showed me how to keep milk cold 20 miles from the nearest electrical outlet; he jumped up, said follow me to the big tree down there. He showed me the old blue plastic cooler, the kind you have in the garage from the 2008 vacation trip to Wyoming that you forgot you had. He opened the lid knowing I didn't understand my own question. "Gee, Uncle Buck, I know that's where we keep the ice, but how are we going to keep the milk cold?" He pointed to the half gallon paper jug. Of milk. I had never noticed it before. Because I had always taken it for granted. In that very short moment - a millisecond of time really - I learned what I am about to tell you. Eating right is not that hard.

Uncle Buck grew up in Colorado Springs. a life lesson he would teach me years later when TLOML said here's what Uncle Buck meant. Or, what Mr. Khonke said, "it's not what you wish you knew, it's how to remember to use what you already have." Uncle Buck taught me what I needed to know for THAT moment, not what I needed to eat for breakfast on Nov 10th. In other words, when I started this journey, I didn't know all the things necessary for dropping from 367 pounds to 210 pounds in 15 months. "Uncle Buck, all I want to know right now is how keep the milk cold."  He used other words, but now I now he said, "Start eating right." Seems logical to me today that I only need to the next thing do do. Later, God would prompt me on what to do next through men that stand in for Uncle Buck: Wayne Crull, Mark Kleinbach, and Sylvain, not to mention Microsoft who put Sunscreen on their Microsoft Smart Phone. The rest of the host of angels are too numerous for me to remember now, but God will remind me someday.

So, before you finish that protein shake, or add that herb to your milk, ask yourself this question. In the context of today, knowing where you are now, what is the very next thing you need to do to lose those 7 pounds before the big game on February 5th when you want to look like the sexiest thing alive in front of your TLOML?

(Okay, now you can eat both the shake and the herb supplement; it's okay. At least you are doing something. Fifteen months from now you will understand the power and beauty of your youth. You will understand why my son wrote these lyrics, "Turn It Up, Turn The Page....."
